Sophie Starzenski was born in Buenos Aires in 1985. She learned the art of photography at the age of 18 studing with the italian photographer Aldo Bressi. She worked in analog format and made her own copies in the lab. At 19 she started attending different courses to complete her technique and decided photography was more than a hobby. She is a traveller, takes her cameras wherever she goes. She participated in expos at her hometown Buenos Aires, works freelance and collaborates with local media.
Her face is covered by the camera she is holding to take a picture of herself, the back curved by the effort of doing so while covering her breast at the same time: the same woman, photo by photo never changes her pose but the belly does change: a selfie of a pregnancy, it can be called.
Argentinian photographer Sophie Starzenski was committed to show her body changing during the 9 months pregnancy and she did so on the Behance website. Something different from the usual magazines covers with pregnant celebrities exhibiting their belly.
What’s the result?
A very understated and yet efficiently, intimate photographic portrait of how pregnancy changes a woman body without judgment, drama or self-celebratory acts (since the woman’s face is always covered by the camera). The photographer is not alone though, but only in the last photo, you understand what she was trying to achieve, the photo where she holds her baby.
It’s quite a relief as a woman to see something like that as the whole process, dealt in this way, looks as natural as possible, a gradual and fulfilling adjustment of the body that is creating a new life. Kudos to Sophie, who was able to keep her privacy intact while showing to the world her beautiful baby bump.
